My vivid memories of how I became to know John stretch back some 33 years ago through the sport of bicyclemotocross that we all loved, John was always there with Weston Super Mare BMX club supporting and racing at the south central regional races that ran through the summer/winter months, there were many standout memories of John, I remember seeing many great races he had with his contempories such as John Johns & Pete Dymott to name a few racing on their 24" cruiser bmx bikes in what was 40+ age group. John was a serious & dedicated racer, he always gave 110% and I witness some great races he had not just at regional level but also at national & world championship level which he excelled at making many championship finals in his distinguish racing career. I think one of John's greatest achievements and one I know he took great satisfaction from was the hugely successful Terry's Turbos BMX racing team he ran, which consisted a small group of gifted BMX racers from various age groups of which many of his team riders went onto win national & British Championship titles. John always use to come over to chat with my dad & I when we met at BMX races, he would always find time to have a chat & give me words of encouragement before I went racing and would often ask if he could help my dad at regional and national events when he wasn't racing, he shared that same passion that my dad had for the sport of BMX and that was always putting the riders first and supporting those volunteers of which John was one to help make the races the successes they were back in the day or as John would say 'the good old days' even recently on my 2nd stint back racing in Veterans class John would always post lovely kind words of encouragement on my Facebook posts and would always ask that we 'stay safe' as I don't think he was a big fan of today's modern technical tracks, he was concerned for those like me who he has known from our early careers in the sport putting ourselves in harms way again, to me this shows John's lovely compassion he had for today's new racers and those he called his friends that stretch back some three decades in sport of BMX racing. John has enriched so many people's lives he was extremely supportive to the mental health charity 'Mind' and it was a lovely pleasure to see him come along to support the charity races that have been run at Bournemouth BMX club for last two years, I know John has been a huge advocate of supporting charities in particular Alzheimer's Reasearch UK which I know was very close to his heart. John was a lovely, wonderful man, he will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
